Children and young people (from age ten upwards) can look forward to a brand new opera based on the Greek myth of Echo and Narcissus. It is a story of love, about being self-obsessed and about being rejected by ‘the one and only’.
The main character is the teenage boy Zander – a nerd who is obsessed with sound and the way an echo is created in the computer and in nature. While he plays electronically with the creation of echoes and tries to find a scientific explanation of the phenomenon, he is whirled into the Greek legend of Narcissus and Echo. The mountain nymph Echo falls in love, like all young boys and girls, with the divinely beautiful young Narcissus, who stays aloof from all attempts to approach him. For the young Narcissus is in love with his own reflection, but is overwhelmed by a sense of emptiness and loses his zest for life when he discovers that his beloved is a reflection in the water. Echo wastes away with unrequited love to nothing but a voice, while the teenage boy escapes from the fantasy story with a greater understanding of the echo concept and the consequences it can have to be self-absorbed.

The opera Narcissus and Echo combines the classical myth with the music of today in a present-day story with relevance for teenagers in 2010.
