Are children capable of composing music?
Of course they are! Just as children's drawings are creative and amazing, and express a spontaneity, which many of us later lose, children are also able to create music.

How does it sound and how does it look?
All that you are able to watch and listen to when the childrens own music is played by professional musicians.

But how to transfer the idea in the child's head to the orchestra?

The composer usually solves this through notation. But if you
-  like most kids (and many adults!) - do not know
this ingenious system of signs, must it then hold one from creating
music?

This project's answer is no.

So what is Small Composers?
Small Composers is a composition workshop for children which combines professional musical work and education. Children with no previous musical knowledge develop their own musical forms, which are then realised by professionals.

"Here children are really encouraged to be creative. Their imaginative ideas are always taken seriously – musicians and children meet eye to eye. Here music education, in the real sense of the word, takes place.“

Children draw and tell their inner music with composers and musicians Peter Bruun and Jesper Egelund.
Small Composers is a project developed by the FIGURA Ensemble since 2005.

Our goal is to unleash the creative powers that all children hold within themselves by letting the children work directly with professional composers and musicians.
We encourage children to compose music, through simple excercises and tools. Excercises that helps them understand musical elements like rhythm, pitch, form and sound. And tools that enables them to write down and present musical ideas to the performers.

The music is performed as well by themselves and by professional musicians.
By the end of the day every child has composed music!

Small Composers is suitable for schools, symphony orchestras, family projects, communities, cultural institutions and festivals.
